In 2025, web technology is set to make significant leaps, with advancements not only in AI but across various aspects of web development. From the widespread adoption of AI tools to the rise of Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), developers and businesses alike need to stay informed about the future of web development such as websites performance optimisation. This article explores the top upcoming web development trends and why they matter for your business.
This is the first of a two-part series covering web development trends for 2025.
AI in web development is transforming how websites and applications are built. Initially, tools like ChatGPT provided coding assistance but required detailed instructions and developer expertise to be effective. Recent innovations, such as GitHub Copilot, act as intelligent coding assistants, streamlining development by suggesting and even generating code snippets.
However, there are challenges. Over-reliance on AI for full-code generation can introduce vulnerabilities, including security flaws. Despite these risks, AI tools offer immense potential to accelerate development timelines, improve code quality, and reduce project costs. As these tools mature, they are likely to become indispensable in the developer鈥檚 toolkit.
Low-code and no-code platforms like聽WebFlow, Bubble and OutSystems are democratizing web development by allowing non-technical users to build websites and applications without extensive coding knowledge. These platforms are ideal for small businesses and individuals who need simple, effective solutions. For example when I wanted to create a website in the 2000’s I had to take weeks learning HTML and CSS. I am thankful for this as it led to me eventually learning many more complex languages leading to Trisec Consulting being created.
While these low-code and no code tools lower barriers to entry, they have limitations in scalability and customization. For complex, enterprise-level applications, traditional coding remains essential. However, the rise of these platforms underscores the shift toward faster, more accessible web solutions.
Web3 and blockchain are reshaping the internet by introducing decentralization and enhanced security. Blockchain鈥檚 decentralized nature underpins trends like Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and tokenized digital identities, which offer secure authentication solutions.
Web3 envisions an internet where users have more control over their data, and propose a democratised future of the web development. This year, expect a surge in decentralized applications (dApps) that harness blockchain technology for innovative use cases. While still in its early stages, Web3鈥檚 potential to redefine data ownership and privacy is undeniable. This year I predict that we will see many new and innovative dApps.
Website performance optimization is a cornerstone of modern web development. Google鈥檚 emphasis on metrics like Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) has made Core Web Vitals critical for SEO and user experience. Faster websites not only rank higher in search results but also provide a better visitor experience.
To stay competitive, businesses must prioritize regular performance audits and implement optimization techniques, such as image compression, lazy loading, and the use of content delivery networks (CDNs). As Google continues to influence web development priorities, I predict that performance will remain a top trend.
I plan on writing an article on Progressive Web Apps in the future. For now you need to know that Progressive Web Apps bridge the gap between websites and mobile applications, offering offline functionality, enhanced performance, and features like push notifications. Companies like Starbucks and Pinterest have already adopted PWAs to great success, providing seamless experiences for users across platforms.
PWAs are particularly beneficial for businesses aiming to reach both web and mobile audiences without developing separate native apps. As more businesses recognize their advantages, I believe that PWAs will likely become a dominant trend in web development.
The future of web development is shaped by rapid advancements in technology and shifting user expectations. From AI-powered tools to the evolution of PWAs, these trends represent opportunities for businesses to innovate and stay competitive in the digital landscape.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of this series, where we鈥檒l explore even more trends shaping the web development industry in 2025.
